Internal Leagues

After discussion at the AGM about the Internal Leagues, Paul was moved to share his experiences.
As Chairman, I endorse his views and reproduce his open letter here :-

I would like to introduce myself to all the members here at Shrewsbury Squash Club. My name is Paul Allen, some of you will know me from playing against me or just passing me in the corridor…. or even as that driving instructor from SDL ??
Having played squash at the club for over 8 yrs now I’ve enjoyed playing and meeting other players.
However one of the best things I did was to join the internal leagues here at the club… when I was first asked to join the league by the great man Cyril I said “ me…. no way…. I’m not good enough for that !! How wrong was my thinking, ?? he explained how the leagues are a ladder and everyone starts off at the bottom, the leagues aren’t about how good you are but how you can improve your skills by playing different players each month. I’ve played in the leagues pretty must consistently and by doing this my game has improved so much, and would you believe me when I say playing the better players has pushed me even more…. Also the little bits of advice by these players have made a huge difference to my game. As they say, every day is a school day, and for me walking onto that court it makes me want to improve even the smallest of things each game… By starting at the bottom league which is like going to back to primary school to be honest you are able to match your self against different opponents, some will be the same as you and some will be better but what this does it makes you raise your game to try and win….. never let anyone say it’s only a friendly… no such thing. We all want to win each time we step onto that court for sure. Of course we don’t always but that’s any sport, some you win some you come second !! Also you will find after playing the new opponents you meet they will help you with advice if you would like some help or just friendly banter… if you know me banter is a good part of my game ??????????
So please give some thought to joining me in the leagues for a few months and see how you feel. I’m always happy to help you with advice or answer any questions about this too… go one put your name down and take that step to improving your game with me.
Look forward to meeting some new opponents in the future

Paul Allen
